Haflidi Hallgrimsson Written in Sand
Prokofiev Sonata for Solo Violin in D major Op.115
Philippa returns with another programme of some of the most expressive and colourful music written for a single violin. To counter the dark and cold of January we will hear Bach's Partita in E major shot through with sunlight, balanced by his most famous and joyous first cello suite. There are elements of folk music in works by two British women composers Sally Beamish and Wendy Hiscocks and an exotic glimpse into the Brazilian rainforest in the piece Pernambuco by Nigel Clarke. The eerie Written in Sand by Icelandic composer Haflidi Hallgrimsson explores yet another sound world - and the muscular and virtuosic sonata by Prokofiev brings the journey to a close.
The violin is an extraordinary instrument and it is remarkable to see up close the way that composers continue to expand its language of articulation and delivery,

Scott Bumblebees
In this collection of pieces, Philippa delivers the Partita in D minor by Bach, one of the most deeply contemplative of pieces with the astonishingly complex final movement the Chaconne, a dance over a ground bass with 64 variations. Missy Mazzoli is a groundbreaking composer from New York who responds to the opening of the Chaconne in her mesmerising piece Dissolve, O my Heart. Telemann casts an elegant Baroque path through his solo fantasias and is answered by the exciting young British composer Leo Geyer. Leo wrote Guarea for Philippa to perfrorm at the Barbara Hepworth Garden in St Ives and the music comments on the exotic wood and shapes Hepworth's most famous sculptures. To continue with an upward trajectory and idea of flight (of fancy, of fantsay), we close with a tiny gem, Bumblebees by Cyril Scott.
